Hiya, folks. Jon Pic from the El Dorado Times here... A quick announcement for you... On Wednesday June 27, I'm going to jail. While I've committed no crime, I think the sentencing is quite fair. For years, my predecessor Steve Smith donated an hour of his time on one day to sit behind bars for the Muscular Dystrophy Association. It seems only reasonable for me to be willing to do the same. The MDA is "dedicated to the eradication of the muscular dystrophies, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (Lou Gehrig's disease), Myasthenia gravis, the spinal muscular atrophies, Friedreich's ataxia and a host of other neuromuscular diseases." The only way to truncate my sentence -- already a mere hour -- is to raise money for the MDA. While the hour itself is no great sacrifice on my part, I'd like to raise enough money to perhaps drop the charges altogether. According to the MDA informational packet I recently received, $25 "pays for a flu shot for someone for whom respiratory disease could be very dangerous. $63 keeps MDA's worldwide research program going for another minute. $600 sends a kid to one of MDA's 90 summer camp sessions." Apart from a husband and wife I recently interviewed, I don't know anyone with MD and it's not really a personal mission of mine to raise the funds for MDA, but I do feel a certain responsibility to the position I'm in. For donation information, drop me an e-mail at reporter@eldoradotimes.com and I'll get you set up with all the info you need. You can even make donations online now. My bail is set at $650.
